Jaipur, welcomes you with folded hands and “Khamma Ghani”, meaning enormous, immense, colossal greetings. The city stands out in hotpink of its fabric prints and texture, in rich fuchsia pink of culture and traditions,crayola pink of hospitality, pastel pink of opulent architecture seen in forts and city gates, and shocking pink of spicy-n-piquant delicacies you cannot afford to miss. It epitomises fusion of antiquity and modernity. While stunning hilltop forts and glorious palaces fit like footprints from a rich royal history, Jaipur has evolved into a throbbing commercial center with bustling bazars that are a shopper’s paradise.
Also called the ‘City of Victory’, Jaipur was built by the great warrior-scholar-astronomer king Maharaja Jai Singh II in 1727. It earned its epithet of the ‘Pink City’ when in 1876, it dressed itself in pink to welcome Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria.
I had four days to spend….. enough to discover and fall in love with the city and its culture. This is my account of the visit, with details on how to see the most in very less time, described under….Seeing…Shopping…Snacking..:P
You can hire an auto on hourly basis, like we did, or book a cab. Auto would be a better option considering the traffic and condition of roads. Start early, for obvious reasons..:). Carry water, sunscreen, shades and camera.

There are a lot of other places to see, but I didnt have so much time. (Had to attend the conference as well.:P)

There is so much you can take back from Jaipur, from tye-n-dye, gotapatti worked scarves and sarees to kundan n meenakari work jewellry, and blue pottery handicrafts. The various bazaars you can drop by and indulge yourself are..

Kishanpole Bazar: for wooden handicrafts and jaipuri textiles.
There are lot of smaller street bazaars all around Hawa Mahal…you can ask for directions when you get there..:)
Lot of flavorsome, palate tingling options ranging from Dal Bati choorma to spicy Lal Maas (non-veg). The water in the dishes is substituted by butter milk and ghee (clarified butter) and curd, due to scarcity of water in the city. And for those who love pickels, Jaipur is the place. You get fiery pickels…of green and red chilly. Every dish has a special taste which makes you crave for more.
I had an amazing time at Jaipur, thanks to the warm hospitality of people I stayed with, and the grandeur of the city that has left an indelible mark on the pristine pages of my memory.
You must visit the Pink City, whenever you get the chance. The perfect blend of preserved heritage and modernity will definitely leave an impression. And as for me…
